Robert Boyle was a natural philosopher, chemist, physicist, inventor, and early gentleman scientist, noted for his work in physics and chemistry. Joseph Louis Gay-Lussac was a French chemist and physicist. He is known mostly for two laws related to gases, and for his work on alcohol-water mixtures, which led to the degrees Gay-Lussac used to measure alcoholic beverages in many countries.

Boyle came up with Boyle's Law that relates volume and pressure. Jacques Charles made the first hydrogen balloon. Gay-Lussac determined the relationship between temperature and pressure. Charles used the other two's work to figure out how to get a hot air balloon to fly.
